Adela Portland Concert reviews
Back to the future...
I'm not sure what my expectations were going in, as I don't attend many live concerts. Back in the day, Adela was a favorite band of mine from the 'Woodstock generation'. Reclaimed the spotlight more recently with the terrific 'Supernatural' album, which I loved. I grabbed tickets when I saw he would be performing live in Atlantic City. The Mark Etess arena at the Trump Taj Mahal is more intimate than a stadium venue, while still accommodating a large crowd. When I found our spots, I could see that the line of sight to the stage was not ideal, but we were close enough to actually see the performers (when the sea of heads and shoulders shifted the right way). The sound system was very well calibrated - I don't know the technology of sound, but the volume was amped up but not distorted in any way - made listening a pleasure without any accompanying pain. Steve Winwood was the opening act, and he was a wonderful surprise. I remembered fondly some of Traffic's hits from the past, but Winwood just had not been on my radar recently. The man hasn't lost a step - he's in fine voice and showed his mastery of both keyboard and guitar during the set. The stage presentation was low key - some colored spots and not much else. No background video and not much conversation between songs. Just great song after great song, performed impeccably. The crowd clamored for an encore, but didn't get one - had to give the headliner his due, I guess. Santana's production was glitzier - more musicians, background video, large screen closeups of the musicians, more light effects. After about a half hour intermission, the headliner, Carlos Santana came on. Liked - reliving the greatest hits, the intensity of the percussion, Carlos rocking it out on guitar as he can still do. Liked less - the multiplicity of vocalists (there were three guys who shared the lead singing roles, and their styles didn't complement one another all that well), the drummer's shtick during his prolonged solo (OK, we get it, you can multi-task), Carlos' 'peace-love-I'm in such a good place' monologue towards the end of the show. But overall, I really enjoyed the concert. The band as a whole performed at a very high energy level for the entire show, really 'putting out' for the audience, and the audience loved it. Speaking of the audience, watching my fellow boomers 'groovin'' like late 60's time travelers was a trip in itself. I didn't see many twenty- or thirty-somethings, but I hear they were there. I hope so, because this music is too good to become nothing more than nostalgia for geezers.
